Acai Palm
The acai palm or açaí palm is where acai berries grow. The scientific name of the palm trees
which bear the acai berries in abundance is Euterpe oleracea. The acai palm trees are mostly found in swamps and
floodplains. The acai palm trees have many uses not just to produce the acai berries.

Where are the acai palm trees native to?
The acai palm trees are native to tropical countries in Central and South
America such as Belize, Brazil and Peru. They are largely found in low lit, swampy areas such as
the Brazilian rain forest.

Description of the Acai Palm Tree
Each acai palm tree is large and tall. Each tree has many trunks and many branches. Each acai
palm trunk produces four to eight bunches of acai berries throughout the year. Young acai palm trees do not produce
fruit. They usually have to be at least four to five years old to start producing acai berries.
How tall and wide is an acai palm tree?
Each trunk measures up to 25 meters tall and four to six inches in diameter wide.
How many trunks does an acai palm tree have?
On average, each acai palm tree has four to eight trunks. However, an acai palm tree can have up
to 25 trunks.

At the top of each acai trunk, there are many branches of acai berries clustered together and
hanging down from each branch.

Not only the acai palm tree is the source of a large quantity of acai berries for food, the acai
palm is harvested for its palm hearts. The fronds of the acai palm is used to thatch homes as well as for
weaving.
